While it may be the largest city in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, there’s much more to do in Minneapolis than explore its amazing waterways—although there’s plenty of that to do (and, as it happens, quite a few beaches to kick it at in the summer months, too). While it has remained under the radar of most travelers, Minneapolis’ reputation for an amazing theater scene, stunning cuisine, and legendary park system have combined (along with a host of other things) to make this a burgeoning metropolis like no other.
Let’s start with the theater. Not necessarily what you’d think of when you’re thinking Minneapolis, right? But, when it comes to live theater, Minneapolis plays second fiddle only to the Big Apple. From improv to politically-charged socially minded satire on the leading edge of theater, you can expect to find a huge variety of performances to fit your bill.
With a performance scene as rich and vibrant as Minneapolis’, it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that there’s also a heap of world-class museums and art galleries to explore. If you’re really looking to get a taste of local flavor while you’re here, we have three words for you: beer and coffee. From locally-sourced sour beer and expertly-pulled ristretto shots to classic lagers and a solid cup of drip coffee, your drinking needs should be more than well catered to. There are also a ton of distilleries around, too (if you’re looking to get into the spirit of things)—not to mention a bar scene that spans from punk to speakeasy and locally-loved dive to rooftop sake brewery.
Summers, though, are when things really get going in Minneapolis. Kick back at a beach, head out on a fishing trip, drive a tank, ride a bike, rent a SUP, people watch in a park—just get outside! But don’t forget to sample the city’s bounty (preferably on one of the many patios that sprout up). To say that Minnesota’s rich harvest goes to good use would be a bit of an understatement in the fabulously delicious world of Minneapolis’ dining scene. You can expect modern, chic farm-to-table spots; flawlessly classic bistros, casual diners with seriously amazing food, well-loved local dives, and a fleet of international options that span the culinary world.
